How We Grow Dates in Jaisalmer Desert
From Planting Palm Trees to Harvesting 15 Tons Per Acre
Year 1-2: Planting & Establishment
Young Medjool date palms are planted during monsoon season (July-September) when Indira Gandhi Canal provides optimal irrigation. Each palm is planted 8 meters apart to ensure proper growth. We use drip irrigation system from day one.
Year 3-4: Growth & Development
Palms reach 2-3 meters height and develop strong root systems. We apply organic compost made from local cattle manure every 3 months. Solar-powered pumps ensure consistent water supply during harsh desert summers.
Year 5: First Flowering
Male and female flowers appear for the first time. Our experienced farmers hand-pollinate female flowers using pollen from male palms. This ensures maximum fruit set and quality. Each female palm can produce 50-100kg of dates.
Year 6+: Full Production
Mature palms produce premium Medjool dates annually. Harvest begins in September when dates reach optimal sweetness (Brix level 65-70). Each date is hand-picked and immediately sorted for size and quality. Our 150-acre plantation produces 50+ tons annually.
